What is RSS?
Rich Site Summary or Real Simple Syndication is a web document
type that can ‘feed’ to your desktop real time updates to web sites & blogs you select.
It’s your simple way to keep track of site news and blog postings,
but only those you’re interested in.
RSS will automatically notify you when a new article or a feature
has been added. With an RSS feed, you’ll be notified without having to visit each page.
How is RSS different than email?
With email, you intentionally authorize or grant the sender access
to your inbox. Once you’ve authorized email access, you can’t simply
take back your address and prevent someone from using it.
What’s worse, your address is open to ‘discovery.’
Unlike email, an RSS registry is virtually ‘spam proof’ because you
decide from what sites or channels from which you want to receive a feed.
It’s up to you to decide. Should the content sour, you simply unsubscribe
to the service. If you’re not interested in the content, you disconnect.
You’re in control. End of story.
How can I make use of RSS?
You’ll need an RSS Aggregator (some call it a Reader or News Reader)
which collects the information feeds from the websites you choose and
then displays them on your computer.
The Reader is a small web applet which, once installed, gives you a
window to view your feeds and easy user controls to select and deselect
sites from which you want news. As you visit sites of interest, simply
choose which RSS feeds you want.
Where can I get a Reader?
A variety of Readers are available for different operating systems,
so you will need to take this into account when you make your choice.
Many Readers are free for the asking.
See Google Search for more information.
Several free newsfeed readers are available including:
NetNewsWire Lite - for the Mac
Feed Demon - a free trial for the PC
Bloglines.com - a web-based free newsfeed reader.
Or see the list provided by Google
How can I sign up for the "MindServe Clipper" RSS feed?
Our weblog address is http://www.mindservegroup.com/blogs/ Quick links to the
RSS feed are available on the right side of the page under Syndication. Each of
the Readers has a slightly different routine to add sites to your RSS feed.
In some cases you simply copy the web address into the Reader. In others,
the Reader may do everything for you. You can follow the instructions for
your particular news reader in order to add this XML feed to your RSS list.
