Cornell Method Note Taking

Benefits of using this template:

In addition to a free form approach to note taking (vs. typical linear notes), this method offers a 'built in' review or study guide.

How to use this template:

Each 'window' in 'Key Words' represents a general idea as presented in a lecture.

1) During the lecture, in the 'General Ideas in Free Form Text' windows, type content as quickly as possible, capturing as much of the spoken text as you can reasonably and meaningfully add.

2) Put hard carriage returns between thoughts while working from within a window.

3) As new major thoughts are discussed, move to another window.

4) Pay no attention to spelling nor to whether you're using complete sentences. Abbreviations are useful.

5) Use the Inspiration Note feature to add supplemental information or thoughts relating to the topic.

6) After lecture, review your notes.

7) In the 'Recall' column, in your own words, jot down key ideas or key words that capture the essence of the lecture. Summarizing in your own words clarifies and reinforces what you have learned and strengthens memory.

8) The 'Recall' column now acts as a cue for capturing major facts and ideas of the lecture.

9) With each Recall key idea or key word, meaningfully recite as much as you know.

10) Then, open each window in the 'General Ideas' area to verify what you have said and learn of any areas that need further understanding.

11) A minimal amount of time, 10 minutes, spent a week doing a quick review of your notes will help you retain most of what you have learned.

Note: the windows are 'designed' to overlap or 'stack' so as to capture large amounts of text with plenty of spaces between ideas while still remaining organized and in sequence.

Think of them as clickable 'packets' of information. You can place an enormous amount of text in each of the windows but most of it will remain hidden until you 'click' the window.
